Nicholas, the name Devine may be popular in Cork but its origanally from the North of Ireland. However there are a lot of variants on the spelling: Devin, Divine, Devane etc

Donn who is in charge of the Devine DNA Project wants to see if there is a genetic link between the various versions of the name to see if we can pin-point an ancestral home for Devines.

I lived in Sweden for a year a couple of years back, and had the benefit of a long break between the end of classes and the beginning of a new job. While i traveled i ran into more than my fair share of Irish folks, and i always made a point of asking where the name "Devine" came from. The answer was the same from pub owners in amsterdam to traveling students in austria, and most notably, the Irish in Ireland :) Devine as it turns out is a good strong Cork name. Artistic and poetic maybe but Cork through and through.

cheers
